Seeds of Security: Introduction to Recovery Seed Phrases

In the event that anything goes wrong when storing your coins, knowing your seed phrase will allow you to recover your assets. But what is a seed phrase and how can you find yours? Most importantly, how can you go about keeping your seed phrase and cryptocurrencies safe?

What is a seed phrase?

A seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic phrase) is a list of 12 to 24 common words that serves as a human-readable representation of your wallet’s private key. If you lose access to your crypto wallet — whether because of a broken device, forgotten password, or other mishap — your seed phrase is the master key that lets you restore access to all of your funds.

Think of it this way: your wallet stores your private key (a very long, complex string of numbers and letters). Your seed phrase is a simplified, memorable version of that key. Crucially, anyone who has your seed phrase has full access to your funds — so keeping it safe is essential.

Where can you find your seed phrase?

Your seed phrase is generated when you first set up your crypto wallet. Most wallets will display it once during setup and instruct you to write it down. After that initial display, reputable wallets will never show it again — so if you didn’t write it down, it’s gone.

For hardware wallets like Trezor, the seed phrase is displayed on the device’s screen during initialization, specifically to prevent it from ever appearing on an internet-connected computer.

How do you keep your seed phrase safe?

The most important rules for seed phrase safety:

  • Write it down on paper (not digitally) and store it in a secure, private location.
  • Never store it digitally — not in photos, cloud storage, email drafts, or notes apps. Any internet-connected storage is vulnerable.
  • Make multiple physical copies and store them in different secure locations (e.g., a home safe and a bank safety deposit box).
  • Never share it with anyone — no legitimate service or support team will ever ask for it.
  • Consider using a metal backup plate to protect against fire or water damage.

What happens if you lose your seed phrase?

If you lose your seed phrase and then lose access to your wallet (e.g., device breaks, gets stolen, or is lost), your funds are permanently inaccessible. There is no “forgot my seed phrase” option — the whole point is that no central authority can reset it.

This is why writing down and securing your seed phrase is the single most important step in safely storing crypto.
